Week #8 vs. St. Charles (East) (6-2)
Wildcats Get Extra Points in Win St. Charles (Norris Stadium) - The Wildcats avoided overtime Friday night, an ran off with the victory, spoiling East's homecoming, with the help of speedy junior Alan Smith (RB 5'10 190). Smith broke away from the pack on several occasions in the game, but none were bigger than his 2 touchdown runs of 68 & 44 yards. Giving the Wildcats their first & last score of the game. Of course some might say it was the extra points that Neuqua scored that actually won the the game. After a 6 yard TD reception by Neuqua's Dan Fornek (TE 6'4 226 sr.), put the Wildcats back up by 7, with just over 7 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter, the Wildcats would see the Saints come marching back, on the very next possession. With a 40 yard kick return by speedy wide receiver Caleb Clausen (5'5 150 jr.) had the Saints sitting pretty around mid field. Later on the same possession, a pass interference call on Neuqua on 3 & 16 for St. Charles, would give the Saints a break, after they had managed to get into the red zone, but psuhed back out on penalties On 2 & 5 at the goal, the Saints would give the ball to John Brown (RB 5'11 170 sr.) who would get in the endzone for the Saints for the second time in the game. The Saints PAT kick would be low and bounced off an offensive lineman, leaving the Saints down by one instead of tied. With 11 minutes left to play after Smith scored in the 4th, putting the Wildcats up 21-13, the Saints still had plenty of fight left in them & plenty of time left on the clock. Big receptions by CJ Kumerow and a big 31 yard run by Brown, had the Saints back in the red zone sitting inside the one yard line at one point. The Wildcats defense however, had been ferocious in the red zone tonight, stopping the Saints once before earlier in the game on a 4th & goal situation, with David Plouffe (LB 6'3 200 sr.) deflecting a pass and preventing a TD reception. This time would be no different. With Geoffrey Rowan (LB 5'8 170 so.), Ross Fumagalli (LB 6' 195 jr.) and company, finding their way through the offensive line of St. Charles, the defense helped rush two different plays, with the Saints making errors on both and fumbling the ball twice. The later on 4th down, helping turn the ball over when Brown fell on the ball recovering it for the Saints. Once the Wildcats got the ball back, it looked like Smith might be back to his old habits, as he broke off on a 30 yard run, before a diving tackles by the last man to beat, Ben Gray (LB 6'2 170 sr.) saved the day. With 3 minutes left, the Saints would get the ball back after sticking the Wildcats on third down, forcing them to punt from midfield. Like a team on a mission, the Saints moved the ball from their own 37 all the way into the endzone. With 2 big receptions from Cory Murtaugh (WR 6' 200 sr.) and Brown getting runs of 12 & 5 yards, the Saints hit pay dirt with 40 seconds left on an 8 yard reception by Dustin Dieter (TE 6'2 185 sr.), poised to force overtime if they could get the 2 point conversion. The Wildcats however would force the Saints quarterback Tyler Fishbone, to over throw his receiver in the endzone, as he was being pursued by more than a few defenders after scrambling to his right then back to his left before throwing off balance while on the move. Rowan, had a fumble recovery & a sack, as he helped make on impact on defense for the Wildcats, as they more than likely be the sole champions of the Upstate Eight conference. by Vincent Johnson
