2005 Panthers Not Satisfied (8/19/2005)

O'Fallon - The Panthers had one of their best season ever in 2004, setting the school record for wins in a season and making it to the state quarterfinals in 7A, for only the second time.

The Panthers are set to return six players on defense this year, but only two from the offensive side of the ball.

One of those offensive two will be running back Justin Stewart, who ran for over 1200 yards last season. He'll be stepping into some new shoes this year though, as he's making the transition to QB.

Junior, Duane Bennett, who is the second returning running back will be looking to add to his 1,000 yard rushing season he had last year and he'll be accompanied by Mike Davis who'll be doing double duty as a cornerback on defense and splitend/runningback on offense.

On the other side of the ball middle linebacker Andy Widell will be looking to lead the team on defense. At 6'2, 225 lbs. he'll be looking to improve upon a defense that held tight in close games, helping O'Fallon post a 17 point differential in their 11 wins.

Winning the conference championships again is going to be a challenge. "How we come together & gel as a team and how we execute at crunch time" are going to be the key aspects of the 2005 team according to head coach Todd Moeller.

"We had some close games last season. Both games withAlton (Sr.)thenBelleville (East) &East St. Louis (Sr.)." Moeller added. Listing those four, along withEdwardsville (H.S.)as the teams that will be trying to replace the Panthers as the Southwestern Conference champs.

As for a repeat of last seasons run, Moeller was quick to remark about the teams lone loss. "We had 5 turnovers & no takebacks and at that level we can't do that and we know that. We're not satisfied. We've got high goals and we're hungry."
