Week #1 vs.Chicago
(Austin)0-1 Bates, Ques Commando's Win The Tiger's sound defense couldn't stop The Commando's Larry Bates who put on a one man show from the opening kickoff ( an 84 yard return for the first TD of the game.) Bates, a 5'9 /180 lb senior, was all over the field as he accounted for 306 ( 63 rush, 48 pass, 78 catch, 117 on returns and 3TD's total) of Marshall's 464 yards of total offense. The Tigers rolled with The Commandoes punch for punch for the entire game. They answered Marshall's opening kickoff return with a 9 play, 68 yd drive that ended with a 42 yard run by #30, Romaine May (60 yds rushing and 1 TD to go with a forced fumble and 1 Int. on defense.) Austin took the lead when QB Brandon Gibson (6/11 - 210 yds, 1TD passing. 8/47 yds and 1TD rushing) scrambled for a 5 yard TD at 7:01 of the third quarter. The third quarter ended when Gibson scrambled out of the pocket to his right on a bootleg and threw a lazer beam to #8, Kyle Taylor ( 3 catches for 150 yds and 1 TD,) who streaked past rumbling pack of Marshall defenders into the end zone for 6 more to give the Tigers a comfortable 26 - 12 lead heading into the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter began the Commandoes bleak outlook went from bad to worse when Romaine May intercepted a Robert Pope pass and returned it 34 yards to Marshall's 4 yard line nearly two minutes into the final quarter. But on the next play, Gibson fumbled the ball as he was blind sided by #54, Brandon Smith, who then recovered the ball for Marshall. With 6:42 left innthe game, Larry Bates took over by leading his team down the field on a four play, Up by four points with just a little bit over two minutes left in the game, Austin went three and out With 1:37 left in the game, Brandon Gibson guided The Austin Tigers 80 yards down the field on a drive to Marshall's 1 yard line with a 11 yard scramble that followed a 52 yard, hail mary strike to #82, Davoius Watt, that brought them back from a 4th and 35 back at their own 37. But with 12 seconds remaining and the clock ticking, Gibson was unable to spike the ball as the time wound down to zero. Austin, led by QB Brandon Gibson, led the Tiger's offense to 453 yards for the game. Their defense was anchored by #79, Willie Smith, who recorded 10 tackles. by John Fox
