6A IHSA Quarterfinals vs. Rock
Island (H.S.)
(11-1)
Rocks Fall On Cinderella's Shoe Crystal Lake (Ken Bruhn Field) - If the Gators had any plans of being at the big dance after Thanksgiving dashed Saturday afternoon, as the the Rocks smashed any glass slipper this Cinderella team was planning on wearing. Lawrence Davis (6', 183 lbs DB) was one of those rocks. Davis was the first and last one to catch a Kevin Brockway pass, unfortunately for South, Brockway, a junior, was their starting quarterback and that last pass was his second interception of the game and the finish of a Gator drive that started deep in Rock Island territory. Davis leaped into the air with just over forty seconds left in the game in the Rocks redzone to halt South's drive towards tying the game if not winning it & continuing there surprise run after beating top seed Freeport the previous week. Waylond Ryan would get the Rocks on the board with just over ten minutes to go in the second. 5'11" fire rocket running back Dillon Smith would run for 77 yards and a 1 yard TD, 11 seconds before the half, as the Rocks would score their only points in the 2nd quarter. Smith would end up leaving the game limping late in the fourth. Gators fullback Brian Marx would cap off a great senior season with 18 carries for 107 rushing, but the lone rushing touchdown would belong to Brockway, who ran it in from 3 yards out. Dan Viger, would get the 2 point conversion as the Gators faked a PAT and he ran in up the middle almost untouched. Junior, Trent Steckel would have 18 carries for 56 yards. Brockway would see plenty of Rock defenders Daniel Payne & Chris Tuttle, as both were involved more than once as he was sacked 5 times. Brockway would finish 8 of 13 with 2 ints and 86 yards passing. Brandon Mize of South would get 2 of South's 3 sacks on the day. Rock Island travels to Gateley Stadium in Chicago next week for a semifinal matchup withChicago (Mt. Carmel). Rock Island is 1-2 against the Caravan beating them 17-7 in 1997, but loosing 39-0 in 1996 & 42-0 in 1999
