Coalers Demolish Trojans

With just over four minutes left in Friday night’s football game, Dwight quarterback Zack Myers connected with wide receiver Curt Perschnick on a 7-yard touchdown.  The following two-point conversion gave the Trojans an eight on the board.  Unfortunately, they had given up 56 points to the Coalers beforehand.

Dwight (0-2) was overmatched, but they did show well defensively for a few series in the first quarter; offensively, poor gameplanning had them reeling.  After three unsuccessful plays on their first drive, Dwight lined up to punt.  A bad snap sent punter Tyler Oelschlager into the endzone in retreat of the ball.  While he did get to it, Noah Roseland got there right behind him and tackled him for a safety and a 2-0 Coaler lead.

The Trojan defense took the field and forced the Coalers to punt on consecutive possessions.   Midway through the first quarter Coal City lead only by the initial safety; score one for the underdogs.

Smith knocked out runs of 17 and 14 on his next two touches, completely pulverizing a would-be tackler at the goal line for a touchdown on the latter.  The extra-point put the Coalers in front 9-0.

Myers, as one might suspect, had a hard time putting anything progressive together, completing only nine of 33 pass attempts for 125 yards with a late touchdown and five interceptions.  Brian Naiden was the recipient of two passes from Myers, including a 25-yard touchdown in the third quarter.  Only one Trojan had better receiving statistics than two catches for 25 yards; the unfortunate part is that Naiden, of course, is a defensive back for the Coalers.

 The next Coaler touchdown came on a quick-hit pass from quarterback Jack Crawford to the tight end Bonarek.  Wide open for the 15-yard score, Bonarek caught and Carpenter threw his first touchdown of the young season. 

The Coalers outscored the Trojans 27-0 to head into halftime with a 43-0 lead.  The first two scores came courtesy of the legs of Mr. Smith.  Both a 26 and 45 yard score were made possible by never ending churning legs and brute strength.  Simply put, the Trojans could not bring him down.  Smith easily broke over a dozen tackles en route to 161 yards on 15 carries with the aforementioned three touchdowns.

Later in the quarter Bernie D’Orazio and Luke Turner rushed in touchdowns of their own from three and one yard out respectively. 

Coming out of the halftime break, the Trojans received little let-up from the Coalers’ special teams.  The second half kickoff was returned 81 yards up the left sideline for a score by Roseland, a sophomore. 

In addition to kicking seven extra point attempts (making six), Ben Rouse also kicked off nine times.  Six of the kickoffs went 60 yards.  Also, Rouse put up four punts for an average of 38.5 yards.  Through two games Rouse has punted 11 times for an average of 38.7 yards.

With so many incompleted pass attempts, the Coaler defense did not have much chance to rack up the tackles in the stat sheet.  D’Orazio and Keegan Grant led the way with five stops including a devastating sack of Myers by Grant. Bonarek, Naiden and Matt Rodriguez each had four tackles.  Tuskey, Chris Walsh and Timm Kroeger each helped with three stops. 

The Trojans rushed, in all, 18 times for -6 yards.
