Week #12 vs Mt. Carmel
Potts & Jones Lead In Blow Out
Harrisburg (Taylor Field) - What was suppose to be the 3A rematch of the year quickly turned into a lop sided game, as Braden Jones & Nathan Potts of Harrisburg, blew through Mt. Carmel's Golden Aces like the Big Bad Wolf would blow through a house of cards. Game time was at 1:30 on this crisp autumn day, but the both stands were packed at noon, some parents & fans' voices had become horse before the opening kickoff, as Mt. Carmel elected to receive the ball to start the game, as this south eastern Illinois classic was about to get underway. This game would be a repeat of the start of the season for both teams & soon to be the last week for one. Running back John Adams would sprint 76 yards down the field on Mt. Carmel's third play from scrimmage, but was dragged down at the 8 yard line. Harrisburg held Mt. Carmel, forcing them to settle for a field goal . That was the closest the Aces would get to the endzone until Harrisburg pulled it's starting lineup with 11:53 left in the game. The remainder of the first half was all Bulldogs. Braden Jones & John Potts ran for a compiled 184 yards & 7 TD (6 rushing.) Braden was the first to score on the day, going 68 yards on a pass reception for the Bulldogs first offensive series. Mt. Carmel would turn the ball over on a stripped lateral attempt by defensive end Jeff Mc Donald. Harrisburg then went repeatedly to Potts, as he helped Harrisburg drive team down field before he would score on a 3 yard run with 2:44 left in the first. Giving Harrisburg a 14-3 lead to start the second. Harrisburg watched Mt. Carmel self-destructed in the 2nd quarter. Dropped punts, bad kickoff returns, a fumble & 2 interceptions (by Brad Brachear & Kyle Smithpeters), along with not being able to contain the run on defense, lead to a 43-3 Harrisburg lead at half-time & a fast clock for the second half. Mt. Carmel held the ball for the majority of the 3rd quarter, but failed to score. Harrisburg would get the ball back & score for the last time with it's starting team with 11:53 to go in the fourth. Adams & Tyler Kirkman would add two touchdowns onto the board with runs of 12 & 8. After the game the entire Harrisburg team made it's way to the home stands to thank the fans for their support this season. Harrisburg will be making the trip up north to Champaign next Friday to play 12-1 Oregon for the 3A state title. Oregon's only loss was to 2A state final qualifier Stillman Valley, 28-14. They beat Addison (Driscoll) 34-14 to make the trip to Champaign. Vincent Johnson |
