Pearl City [Eastland-P.C. Coop]Sets National Points Record (9/28)

Freeport - The Pearl City's (4-1, 2-1) football team made the trip to Freeport to play Northwest Upstate Illini (South) conference opponentFreeport (Aquin)(5-0, 2-0) in a game that might help decide the conference winner, but while hoping to propel themselves to first place in the conference they propelled themselves to first place on a national level.

In a game that would make a defensive coordinator cringe, the Pearl City Wolves fell to the Bulldogs of Aquin 78-74. The Wolves are now part of a new state record; Most combined points in a non shut-out game, along with Aquin. This urpasses the old record of 130, set by Oblong (123) & Effingham (H.S.) (7) in 1921.

The Wolves will also now hold the dubious record for most points scored by a loosing team in Illinois. In doing so the Wolves also propelled themselves into the national spotlight by replacing Indianola, Ms. as the record holder for most points by a loosing team in a game. Indianola scored 71 vs. Ruleville, Ms. (74) in 2000.

Aquin's 74 points may end up being a team record for winning a game, but falls way short of the state record which is 233 points by Staunton, in a game versus Gillespie in 1923. Which is second on the national list. Behind Haven, Ks, who racked up 256 points in 1927. The state record for most points by a wining team in the monderen era (1950-present) is 97 by Olympia Fields (Rich Central) vs. Palos Hills (Stagg) in 1966
