Week #4 @New Lenox (Lincoln
Way Central)
Sandburg Scuff at Rankings New Lenox (Jonas R. Lashnet Field) - As the clock wound down Friday night in New Lenox, Sandburg players started to celebrate their first victory over New Lenox (Lincoln Way Central) in 5 years. As some players started to shout "upset" and "overrated" others scuffed at the idea of the ranking system at all, but who could argue with them? Hardly anybody had picked the #20 Eagles to beat the #5 Knights, but in what is becoming a year of upsets Carl Sandburg's team has at least shocked the SICA (Blue) in becoming the front runners for the conference crown. In a very sloppy first quarter by both teams a number of fumbles and confusion related time-outs were seen along with 2 interceptions by Scott Patterson of Lincoln-Way off of Matt Baldwin. Despite Baldwin's 2 throwing mistakes, he had already propped the Eagles up to a 7-0 lead only a minute and a half into the game. By virtue of a 12 yard run on a play that would have ended in the backfield until he shook a defender off his back. The touchdown was really set up by a Lincoln-Way fumble on the 3rd play from scrimmage after they had fumbled but recovered on their opening kick return. The Knights played catch-up all night, but even with good defensive play and facing backup Sandburg QB James Ward since the mid 2nd quarter, they were unable to sustain a drive early in the game and with a total of three turned over balls off of fumbles. They were unable to put points on the board until the 3rd off of a 39 yard field goal by Jeno Gorgio. They Eagles would answer back as Ward would step up and fire a strike to Geoff Orr for a 78 yard touchdown reception on the next possession . Lincoln-Way's only TD would come late in the fourth on QB Brian Dornbos' pass to his wide open full back Rob Ninkovich for 2 yards.
