Extra points add up for Trevians

Evanston (Memorial Stadium) - If the Trevians had a little dejavu, it should have been no surprise. New Trier had just played Evanston two weeks earlier for a 20-17 overtime victory.

However a couple a of late scoring drives could have been a lot more dangerous had Evanston been able to convert it's extra points.

New Trier struck first on a 32 yard pass from Dusty Napoleon to Tad Stacey, to give them a 7-0 lead. A Ryan O'Rourke interception off of Bryan Kelly would help the Trevians stop a Wildkit drive on the next possession.

New Trier couldn't convert the turnover into a 14-0 lead and Evanston would score late in the 1st on a 50 yard pass to Jody Ellis, to cut the lead to 1 after missing an PAT kick wide right.

New Trier's next score would come off of a 9 play 80 yard drive, as two way back Matt Kelly, would bust through the line and run 36 yards for touch down.

While the first half was mostly a defensive match up, both teams would open up the field scoring three touch downs apiece. The Trevians would come out on top without much of a scare though. Even after the Wildkits scored twice in the final 3 minutes. Thanks in part to the fact that the Trevians were 4 of 5 on extra point conversions, including a two point conversion to make up for a missed PAT kick. While Evanston failed to convert on all four tries.

Extra points weren't the only advantage the Trevians had Saturday afternoon. Turnovers played a big part in slowing down Evanston. Bryan Kelly threw his second interception of the day to Chris Collins on the very first play after the Wildkits forced a punt with 9 minutes left in the fourth & Evanston only trailing 28-12.

The result would lead to New Trier's final touch down of the game. Which came off a 37 yard run that Matt Kelly busted up the middle and broke several tackles to get for his second TD of the game, putting them up 35-12 with 7 minutes left in the game.

Evanston had a chance to make it interesting on the next possession after Kelly found Kevin Meyer for a 40 yard reception that resulted in a 1st & 10 at the New Trier 2 yard line. But the next play would see a Wildkit fumble into the endzone with New Trier recovering the ball for a touch back.

Evanston's late rally fell short again after holding New Trier on offense. A screen pass to Meyer would trick the defense forward only to see Meyer throw a perfect pass to a wide open Jody Ellis for a touch down with 3:11 still left in the game. But a missed two point conversion & a missed two point conversion again on their fourth touchdown with 4 seconds left would bring chants of "Season's over" from the New Trier student section. With Evanston down by 11 not even a miracle could have tied the game up.

The two other Trevian touch downs all came on the ground. Jack D'Angelo had an 80 yarder & Napoleon had a 16 yard run as well.
