Quarter Finals 7A Playoffs vs. 1Rolling
Meadows8-4
Lange/ Mustangs Beat The Odds Rolling Meadows - In what is turning out to be a a season of upsets, Andy Lange (RB/DB 5'10 181 sr.) along with his Rolling Meadows teammates have taken out three teams now that before playing the Mustangs didn't have a combined number of losses equal to or greater than Rolling Meadows's 4 losses this season. The previously unbeaten Elk Grove Grenadiers definitely came in to Friday's game as the favorite. Having won their regular season match up against the Mustangs in week 5 by a score of 35-21 and being rank 18th in the state wide Big 30. Lange would help set up the Mustangs victory with a 1 yard TD, as well as get the full house of Mustang faithful on their feet and cheering as he had some big yardage runs along with Bryan Porter (QB 5'11 178 sr.) to get the Mustangs into the endzone on a 9 play 78 yard opening drive. In the first half both sides played a defensive slug fest as little ground was given up by each team before the punter for the other team came out. Elk Grove put together it's first scoring drive to end the half. Transversing 67 yards before Tim Podulka (QB 5'8 160 sr.) hit Dan Souder (TE 6'1 190 sr.) for a 7 yard TD with 23 seconds left in the half. The third quarter started out looking to be a replay of the first half as the Grenadiers went 3 and out on their first possession, but the Lange would bust out of the pack and take the punt back 70 plus yards to give the Mustangs the lead. Jeff Moore (RB/DB 6' 215 sr.) would cap off the Grenadiers following possession with a 5 yard TD reception from Podulka. A failed kick kept the game form being tied. Rolling Meadows would ride on the back of Lange again on their next possession After moving the ball from their 32 to the 48 of Elk Grove, Lange would run it in the rest of the way on the following play for his third TD of the day. A 2 yard TD run by Mike Larson (RB 5'11 175 jr.) and a questionable 2 point conversion, where Souder was pushed out of the back of the endzone on a recption, was ruled good and would tie up the game and set up what was beginning to look like a Grenadiers comeback. The Grenadiers's defense was fired up hammering the Mustangs on the kick off placing them deep in their own territory and stopping them at the line or in the backfield forcing them to go 3 and out with 8:24 left to play in regulation. But the game instantly went from being a classic playoff game with overtime looming, as the Grenadiers were called for roughing the punter on a heavily argued play, where the Roling Meadows' punter was leveled after the punt was away, in what the Grenadiers argued was blocking not roughing. That penalty gave the Mustangs a 1st & 10. The Mustangs, charged up with the fact that they would be getting a second chance, took the lead as Porter would take it to the endzone on a 48 yard run a several plays later. Elk Grove got the ball back with just over 5 minutes left to play, but a defensive stand by the Mustang forced a 3 and out and would be the last time Elk Grove would see the ball as Rolling Meadows managed to scrape together a 1st down on a 4th & 1. Podulka would finish the game 17-14-0 with 133 yards & 2 TDs. by Vincent Johnson
