Caxys Give CC a Scare, But Lose Steam in 2nd Half

The Caxys traveled to 3-time defending champ Chicago Christian on Friday, playing their hearts out, but losing 49-26.

The first half may have been on eof the teams best halves of football in the last few years accourding to head coach Matt Less. "We lost 49-26 but the score does not represent the effort and heart extended by our boys."

The Caxys started off the scoring and took a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter on a three play drive that included two passes to Ben Winship from Justin Haines. One for 21 yards and the other for 47 yards and the touchdown.

After going back and forth, Chicago Christian added a TD late in the 1st quarter and at the start of the second quarter to take a 21-6 lead. In the middle of the 2nd, Justin Haines made a 44 yard run and added a run for the 2 pt conversion to make it 21-14.

The Knights answered immediately with their patented off-tackle play and took a 28-14 lead with about 4 min left in the half.

After exchanging interceptions, the Caxys mounted a 44 yd drive capped off by a Justin Haines 5 yd TD run.

With a minute and a half left the Knights tried a big pass play and Ben Winship picked it off and returned it to the Knights 42 yard line.

After a penalty and a 21 yard run by Haines, the Caxys had the ball on the 5 yard line with 30 seconds left. Hanies pass three time but they all fell incomplete, but on the fourth attempt Haines rolled right and hit Bobby Coburn for a score as the clock expired, sending the Caxys into the half down by just 2 points 28-26.

Kareem El-Ali, went down with an injury to his knee and sat out the rest of the second half as the Knights took advantage of an L.F.A. team that looked to have like it might have been running out of steam late in the game as Chicago Christian scored midway thru the third and added two more TDs late in the fourth to put the game out of reach for the Caxys.

Justin Haines finished up with 25 carries for 166 yards and 2 TDs and was 8-17 passing for 119 yard with 2 TDs and 3 int. Ben Winship had 6 catches for 109 yards and a TD.

Next week we travel to Mooseheart stadium to face Aurora Christian.
