5A Playoffs 1st Round vs. Lake Villa (Lakes) (5-5)
10/2/2006

Raiders Go 10-0!

Chicago (Gately Stadium) -  Robeson has been waiting 6 years to get its first playoff victory and it happened on Saturday afternoon behind the strong arm of quarterback Jonathan tossing 5 touchdown passes giving him 31 on the year.
"I was very fortunate not to throw any interceptions," said Johnson who was 10 of 18 for 247 yards. "All my receivers were right where they're suppose to be and we put up points.
"We can beat anybody if we try too, we just have to come out and play every game."
But, it took some work to do it as the third-seeded Raiders outlasted 14th seeded Lakes 41-30 in a Class 5A football game at Gately Stadium.
"Yes, it's a big win for us," Robeson coach Fabray Collins said. "We've never made it past the first round. The were able to get past the adversity to do it."
Robeson (10-0) with its victory moves on to play 11th-seeded Dixon in the second round next weekend.
The Raiders had firm control of the game jumping out to a 27-9 lead by late in the second quarter, however Lakes (6-4) picked up a spark of momentum in its favor, when senior Lorenzo Gomez scooped up a Raiders fumble and returned it 15-yards cutting the lead to 27-15.
"Gomez works so hard from the very first day of practice," Lakes coach Lee Mertens said. "It was very appropriate for him to scoop it up and score. It couldn't happen to a better guy,"
Then, The Eagles got themselves back into the game in the third quarter. Senior Sean Hertz (6 catches, 190 yards) caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Richard Fisher (12 of 25 for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns).
"I tried to do whatever I could to win this game," Hertz said. "I tried hard making every play a big one."
Lakes defense stepped up and held the Raiders back on the next possession at their own 7-yard line and forced them to punt.
The Eagles got a partial block, which looked like Lakes would have great field position in Robeson territory. However, the ball was touched by one of the Eagles and recovered by the Raiders and the 16-yard line.
"Maybe, that's the game, the changing moment," Mertens said.  "I just don't know. I feel very confident we could've got some points there. Every game has a defining moment.
"We knew that they could bounce back with some big plays. It was a huge swing of momentum."
Robeson with some big plays and long passes, which led to quarterback Johnson hooking up with Brandon Green (3 catches, 99 yard and 3 touchdowns) on a 20-yard score and followed up with a 42-yard strike to Charles Brown (6 catches, 148 yards and 2 touchdowns) early in the fourth quarter for a 41-22 lead.
"I knew before the half we had the momentum, but we gave it back to them (Lakes)," Collins said. "I knew they wouldn't give up and that's the type of team they are. They were believing in themselves.
"We just had to keep ourselves going and keeping working at it to get things going our way."
