Week #1 vs. Clinton(1-0)
Hawks Fal in the Fourth Quarter The Clinton Maroons came from behind to pull off a fourth quarter comeback win in their season opener. Instead of opening the season with Central A&M, which the Maroons have done every year since 1997, they traveled south to Macon to face the Meridian Hawks. Senior tailback and leader, John Smith piled up 278 total yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Maroons to victory. Dusten Hubble, sophomore quarterback for the Maroons, completed his first two passes on the opening drive before throwing an interception when he was going down for a sack. Clinton got the ball back and Hubble made up for his error. He hit Smith on a sideline pattern around the 40 yard line. From there, Smith broke a tackle and burnt the rest of the Meridian secondary until he hit paydirt for a 90 yard pass play. The second quarter would be a different story, however. Down 6-0 and working with a short field, Meridian quarterback, Dakota Getz, threw and ran for a touchdown to put the Hawks up 14-6 heading into the break. Midway through the third and needing a score, the Maroons drove the ball down the field and Dusten Hubble capped the drive off with a 3 yard keeper into the endzone. Unfortunately for the Maroons, Meridian answered right back when Josh Fountain retuned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a Hawk touchdown. Getz completed a pass to Matt Zucco in the endzone for the two-point conversion to put the Hawks up 22-12. With their backs against the wall, the Maroons fought back. Just into the fourth quarter, John Smith busted his way into the endzone to conclude a solid Clinton drive. On the conversion attempt, however, Hubble was stopped short on a keeper to leave the Maroons trailing 22-18. On the next Meridian possession, Clinton recovered a fumble to give them solid field position with plenty of time on the clock to work with. Clinton continued to give Meridian a heavy dose of John Smith with a few runs from fullback Cody Thomas thrown in. Smith ended the drive by crossing the goal line for a 3 yard run with 7:17 left on the clock. Bo Kinder’s extra point try was blocked leaving Meridian only down by two. The Hawks offense showed signs of life as they slowly moved the ball down the field, but two consecutive dropped passes on third and fourth down gave the ball back to the Maroons. John Smith and the Maroon offensive line was able to keep the drive going, converting two fourth downs and milking the clock until there was no time left. The fourth quarter belonged to the Maroons who controlled the ball for just over ten minutes, including their final drive that ran the clock out from 6:07. Hubble finished the game completing 9 of 14 passes for 166 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Meanwhile, Josh Fountain was able to pick up 61 yards on 10 carries for the Hawks. The Maroons should use this momentum to build on for the rest of the season. Clinton will host Central A&M next week, while Meridian will travel to Monticello to take on the Sages who upset Sullivan this week.
