Week #7 vs. Clinton 3-4
10/7/2005

Clinton Tops Monticello

Clinton (Clinton H.S.) – Needing a win to stay in contention for the playoffs, the Clinton Maroons fought their way to a sloppy, but tough homecoming victory.

The Maroons offense came out flat to start the game, but Monticello ran the ball effectively. Junior Quarterback, Jeremy Camfield capped off a nice drive by hitting Dan Springer on a 9 yard touchdown pass, but the Maroons blocked the extra point try, leaving the score 6-0, Monticello.

With the score unchanged midway into the second quarter Camfield threw his second touchdown pass of the day to Matt Hunt on an 8 yard pass play. The two point conversion failed leaving the Sages on top 12-0. The Maroons needed a big play and some momentum and they got it on their next drive. Stud tailback, John Smith broke some tackles and ran some people over en route to a 78 yard touchdown run. Bo Kinder’s kick was blocked, keeping the score 12-6, Monticello, halfway through the second quarter.

Several nice pass plays from Keith England put the Maroons at the Sage 1 yard line with 21 seconds to go in the first half. From there, he handed the ball off to fullback Brad Wilson, who powered in for the score. This time, Bo Kinder’s extra point kick was good putting the Maroons in the lead 13-12 going into the break.

Knowing that the pressure was still on, the Maroons offense came out firing early in the third. Bo Kinder scored on a 21 yard touchdown pass from Keith England with 9:01 left in the third. The two point conversion try failed, but the Maroons had a little insurance now, leading 19-12.

The Maroons were unable to pull away from the Sages however. Both teams committed turnovers at bad times. Monticello had a whopping 6 turnovers from 4 fumbles and two interceptions while the Maroons only had 2 turnovers, still more than they would’ve liked.

With only 7 seconds left on the clock in the third, the Maroons botched a punt snap, ending with Clinton’s punter, Andrew Smith barely knocking the ball out of the end zone for a safety before a Monticello player could jump on it. Clinton still lead 19-14 into the fourth.

Clinton’s defense stayed tough in the fourth quarter, not allowing Monticello to break anything big, although Phillip Murphy was always a threat for the Sages in the backfield. Murphy ran for 63 yards, but couldn’t make anything big happen. With 4:50 left in the game, the Sages were driving and had the ball at the Maroon 16 yard line. Camfield fired a pass into the end zone, but Cody Moody picked the pass off for the Maroons to seal the Sage’s fate. Moody played a great game on defense with 8 tackles and a key interception.

From there, Clinton preceded the run the clock out until there was no time left. Although, the game was closer than the Maroons would’ve liked, they still kept their playoff chances alive. At times, some tough calls from the referees hurt the Maroons, but they were able to persevere. Monticello gave the Maroons a run for their money, but came up just short. For the Maroons, always reliant, John Smith was able to put up 141 yards on 25 carries although, Matt Cooper, a key offensive lineman did not play.

The Maroons will try to keep their playoff chances alive as they travel to Sullivan to face Richie Highland and the tough Sullivan Redskins. Meanwhile, Monticello travel to Shelbyville and try to upset the Rams.
