Week #6 vs. Clinton (2-4)
9/30/2005

Rams Pull Through in 4th

Shelbyville (Shelbyville HS) – In a massive week six game for both teams, the Shelbyville Rams running game became too much for Clinton, who played a good game offensively.

The Maroons started off early by scoring on their first drive on a 4 yard touchdown run from tailback, John Smith. Bo Kinder added the kick to put Clinton up 7-0 midway through the first quarter. Early in the second, Derrick Hayden, just back from injury, ran for a 20 yard touchdown run. With the PAT, the Rams tied the game up.

Clinton continued to pound the ball out on the ground with John Smith on another impressive drive ending with him scoring on a 13 yard touchdown run. Clinton’s defense played solid the rest of the second half to give them a 14-7 lead going into the break.

Shelbyville Coach, Andrew Kerley, must’ve given a good halftime speech, because his Rams came out firing early in the third. A solid drive ended in a Travis Wheat 1 yard touchdown slam for six. However, Tyler Monkman came free on the PAT for the Maroons and blocked the kick, leaving the Maroons in the lead, 14-13.

Shelbyville started to drive late in the third and had the ball on the Maroon one yard line when time ran out in the third. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Tyler Sickles was able to bust it up the middle for another 1 yard touchdown run. Shelbyville was able to convert the two point conversion on Quarterback Kraig Ladd’s pass. Derrick Hayden kept on running hard, especially on counter plays, something that hurt the Maroons defense all night.

Hayden hit pay dirt on a 22 yard touchdown run with 6:50 to go in the game. Tyler Sickles added the two point conversion with a nice run to the outside to put the Rams on top by eight. Shelbyville had stolen the momentum away from Clinton, but the Maroons weren’t done yet. Keith England, who played a great night at quarterback completing 17 of 26 passes for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns, connected with Bo Kinder on a 22 yard pass play for six. With the Maroons down by two, their only option was a two point conversion. England rolled out to pass on a bootleg, but his pass was incomplete, leaving the Rams up by two.

The Derrick Hayden show continued for the Rams with a strong drive ending in a 16 yard touchdown run. Tyler Sickles’s extra point basically clinched in for the Rams, who now led 36-27. On the Maroons final drive, several personal foul penalties put them at a fourth and long. England completed a pass to John Smith, but it was still well short of the sticks. From there, the Rams kneed the ball to take the victory on their Homecoming.

Clinton Coach, Chris Hammer was obviously a little disappointed about the outcome, but after hearing his comments after the game is happy with the progress the Maroons have made this season, because at the beginning of the season, the Maroons were picked by many coaches to be winless. Now they sit 2-4 with a very winnable and game against Monticello on Homecoming. Meanwhile, Shelbyville will travel to Warrensburg in another must win game, but a winnable game against the Cardinals. Derrick Hayden finished of his night with 199 yards rushing, 122 of them coming in the second half, not to mention his two clutch fourth quarter touchdown runs.
