(Bremen)(6-4)
Dardanes' Sack Helps In Close Call Burbank (Kavanaugh Stadium) - With a strong wind coming out of the west you could almost feel the tension in the air as the chill blew right through your coat as the Fenwick Friars hosted the Bremen Braves at St. Laurence High School in Burbank. In what was an extremely defensive game between the two teams. A two point conversion and a missed field goal would be the difference in the stress filled ending of a game. Trailing late in the game by only one point and on their own 3 yard line, the Braves would orchestrate an amazing comeback attempt as they had their biggest drive of the game. With about 5 minutes left in the game, on 4th & goal on the 4 yard line for Fenwick, Hinton Huckabee (DB 6'2 180 jr.) would stop Fenwick's Patrick Brady (RB 6' 198 sr.) on the 3 yard line for a turnover on downs. With the wind at their backs, Bremen's Amir Ross (QB 6'3 180 jr.) would help give the Braves a couple of big gains in the air. Ross made a couple of gains scrambling out of the backfield, as well as handing the ball off to Carl Brewer (RB 5'9 182 sr.) keeping Fenwick's defense from playing in a complete pass coverage mode. The Brave drove all the way to the 11 yard line before Fenwick's Eric Dardanes (DE 6' 205 sr.) would come up with a huge sack pushing the Braves back to the 17 with 11 seconds a remaining. Bremen would get their field goal team on and try for the game winning points as the clock ran out, but the last extra yard needed for the 35 yard attempt may have been given up on the sack by Dardanes as the ball would float just under the cross bar and just above a lower cross bar used for the soccer goal. Some players fell to the ground in disbelief at the short field goal as other rushed to the endzone to hear the news first hand from the referees. Fenwick scored first and only score came late in the 1st quarter, on the back of a 70 yard plus run by Brady for a touchdown. The Friars would make a good on a 2 point conversion to take the only lead they'd need all game. by Vincent Johnson
