Week #5 Pontiac @ Central Catholic
Defense Helps As Final Final Minutes Tick
Normal (Hancock Stadium) - The Indians defense had it hands full late in the fourth quarter, as a Saints of Central Catholic refused to stop trying to march into the endzone. The Indians got on the borad in the second quarter , after both teams played tough on defense to start the game off. A Pontiac fumble recovery and a sack by sophomore Aaron Vogt, keyed the defense in the 1st. Santos Gonzalez on the very first play of the second quarter bolted 80 yards for a TD. Pontiac would add to the score with a Tommy Green pass to Drew Peterson for his first of two TD receptions of the night, with just over 3 minutes remaining in the half. Pontiac though would end up going into the half with just a 6 point lead after the Central Catholic Saints marched down the field on a drive that started in their own territory. Running back Brian Segobiano did just about everything he could to put the Saints into the endzone, with the clock running down in the 2nd quarter, on a halfback pass he threw a strike to QB Andy Newbold which put them with in a few yards of scoring. On the very next play Segobiano lost his helmet as he pushed his way into the endzone to give the Indians defense it's only blemish of the night. Both Defenses played hard in the third as Aaron Vogt for Pontiac and Brandon Soebbing for Central made big plays for their teams. Pontiac got it's final TD of the night on 32 yard Green to Peterson reception with 10:46 remaining in the 4th. The Indians still managed to get a 2pt conversion even after a 5 yard penalty on a Dylan Mays catch. Things got a little scary for the Pontiac fans as Pat Fruin recovered a Indians fumble and ran for a 5 yards to the 50 with 5:38 remaining. On a fourth & 7 with 2:56 in the game, Andy Newbold would make a dash for the first down marker after being chased out of the pocket, but was stopped short by more than a few yards. Another Indian fumble just a play later would give the ball back to the Saints with 2:35 left after Andrew DuFrenne fell on the on top of it. Once again the Indians D stepped up to stop the Saints as a 4 & 11 pass into the endzone was just in front of a closely defended Pat Fruin. Pontiac road out the rest of the clock behind some hard running by fullback Kevin Watson. Vincent Johnson
