Week #2 vs. Springfield
Williams Interception Saves SHG
Springfield (Spartan Field) - Scared Heart-Griffin & Springfield Southeast sweated out a defensive battle on the grid iron Saturday, in a game that really wasn't over till it was over, or should that be turnover.
Although the game didn't become a turnover bonanza until the quarter. The final minutes of this cross-town matchup sure were a nail biter. Neither team had scored since midway through the second quarter and SHG lead 14-7. Southeast had just crossed over into Cyclone territory with 7 minutes left in the game only to see a pass from junior QB Nate Haassis to Lance Rogers bounce off Rogers and get some serious hang time before being intercepted by LB Zach Kettelkamp.
The Spartans would have the ball a minute later and 49 yard run by junior Aerisun Macon would put them within scoring distance, but a fumble on the ensuing snap would return possession to the Cyclones.
The Spartans did a good job containing Kenny Burn most of the day & late in the game was no exception. They forced SHG to punt then went four and out after SHG stopped Macon short of a first down. With 1:38 left, things looked to be in hand for the Cyclones until a fumble was recovered by Chris Lee of Southeast with 1:30 left.
Southeast would take over inside the 40 of SHG, but cornerback Anthony Williams would have the ball come to him after fighting for it in the air then landing on his back.
Burns & soph. QB Eric Peterman would score in the 1st on runs of 5 & 36 yards. Southeast's lone goal was off a halfback toss & pass from Peter O'Brien to Macon for 30 yards.
