Week #4 vs. Maroa (M.-Forsyth) (4-0)
9/15/06

Maroons unable to stop aerial attack of Trojans

by Matt Eshelman

A lopsided scoreboard showed the result of this year’s ‘Battle of Route 51’ as Maroa-Forsyth shutout Clinton for the second year in a row.

Clinton came into the game a massive underdog to the defending conference champs and top dog in 2A football.

Things started off great for the Maroons as cornerback Ross Bruenger picked off Luke Hockaday’s first pass with a full extension grab.

Clinton was able to move the ball slightly before the Trojans forced a punt.

Shortly after, Hockaday redeemed himself, hitting Austin Place, who slipped off of a couple of defenders en route to the endzone on a 68 yard pass play.

The extra point was good, putting Maroa up 7-0 halfway through the first.

Later in the half, it was much of the same. Hockaday connected with Michael Jump twice for to touchdowns; one from 60 yards and the other from 23. He also tossed a touchdown pass to Robert Kreps and Kaleb Hite each.

After the first half was all said and done, including a safety, the Trojans had a 35-0 lead.

Luke Hockaday and the Trojan offense came out firing on in the second half as well. Hockaday hit Kreps again midway through the third for a 41 yard touchdown.

The Maroons were unable to recover against a very athletic and well disciplined team.

From there, the Trojan defense put the game on ice, not allowing a single point.

Senior leader, John Smith was held to well under 100 yards again this week, only able to muster up 14 yards on just 6 carries.

The loss is tough as are all of them, but it wasn’t necessarily a surprise as the Trojans have been dissecting defenses in the Okaw all season.

Senior star, Luke Hockaday finished the day with 17 completions off of 22 passes for the Trojans.  He had six touchdown passes and a grand total of 348 yards passing. That should put the rumors of a shoulder injury to rest.

Shane Conaway, the second part of the Trojan offense had just 57 yards rushing, but clearly the focus of the offense was on someone else this week.

Next week, the Trojans will have their eyes set on the Monticello Sages, the only other undefeated team thus far this season.

Meanwhile, Clinton will look to keep their slim, but very present playoff hopes alive next week in a potential must win against Argenta-Oreana, who is right in the thick of things in the Okaw.

Thusly, all hope is not lost in Clinton, however it’s on thin ice.
