Week #6 vs. Waterloo (H.S.)
9/29/2006

Panthers drop tough game to  Waterloo

As the Panthers watched the final seconds tick off  the clock when Waterloo QB Blake Novack took his final knee, one had to be  encouraged by the improved level that JCHS maintained throughout the game.

"There was complete silence on the bus trip down, you can tell  everyone was focused", said Panther senior Brandon Yates. The Panther  Tight End/Defensive End said he expected to be back in the line-up in week  7.

Jersey, in dropping their second MVC contest in a row, fell to  3-3 and 1-2 in conference play. It was the second consecutive game that  saw a Panther opponent reach the five victories needed to qualify for the  state playoffs. Currently the Bulldogs are in a spot to fall in the 5A  class of the post season and are seeded tenth, but could quite possibly  fall to 4A once the season ends.

It was obvious from the beginning  that the breaks were not going to fall on the Panthers side, when QB Andy  Updike found Freddie Pohlman at the sideline for what was an apparent  first down on the teams first possession of the game. However, the  officials ruled that Pohlman caught the ball out of bounds and the  Panthers were forced to punt.

Later in the second quarter the  Panthers were again denied, this time on what looked like a sure  interception, when it was ruled that Trevor Crane did not have his feet in  bounds after catching the Blake Novack pass.

"I thought that  Trevor had a key interception in the second quarter but the official saw  it differently," said Coach Chris Skinner.

The Panthers were able  to overcome the questionable call in the opening quarter, and later scored  on an 18-yard touchdown romp by Updike. And after Brandyn Snider's point  after the score was 7-0 in favor of JCHS.

" Andy did a nice job of  throwing the ball and making some nice decisions during the game," said  Skinner. The Panther senior completed 7 of 14 passes for 85 yards and 1  TD, while also rushing for 64 yards. On the defensive side he had 6  tackles and 2 assists.

The Bulldogs did not waste any time getting  on the scoreboard as Novack hit Dylan McNew on a 57 yard pass/running  touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Waterloo took a 14-7  lead just as the first half ended when Novack scored from one yard out on  a quarterback keeper. The touchdown seemed to be a momentum changer, since  it came after the questionable call on the Trevor Crane interception.

Jersey again came out of half time fired up, but on the opening  kick off the Panthers turned the ball over on a fumble and Waterloo took  advantage. Novack would make the Panthers pay with a 23-yard touchdown run  just 2:16 seconds into the third quarter.

The Panthers took the  momentum right back with a successful no huddle drive that was capped off  by a 22-yard touchdown strike from Updike to Pohlman. But the Panthers  took one step back on their following drive, when they turned the ball  over near mid-field.

The Bulldogs did not waste any time getting a  first and goal inside the 5-yard line, until the Panther defense stood  tall and held the Bulldogs on a fourth and goal from the 1-yard line.
"It was an outstanding goal line stand at the end of the third quarter  and start of the fourth quarter." said Skinner. The Panthers had one more  shot at getting the equalizer when they got the ball with just under four  minutes to play, but saw all hopes fade when an Updike pass fell  incomplete on fourth and six in Bulldog territory.

Up next for the  Panthers is a homecoming game against the Triad Knights. The reigning MVC  champion is 2-0 in conference play after handing Mascoutah it's first loss  of the season, last week 30-6. It will be the third game in a row that the  opponent will be going for their fifth and play-off qualifying victory.  Meanwhile, Jersey must still win 2 of it's remaining 3 to qualify.

"Triad will be a true test for us, right now they are the cream of  the conference. We WILL have to play MISTAKE free in this game." Skinner  said in closing.
