Week #7 vs. Troy (Triad) (5-2)
10/6/2006

Panthers drop homecoming battle to Triad 36-21

The earlier scouting reports of Triad having impressive size on their lines was not exaggerated upon their trip to Jerseyville. The Panthers who were celebrating their annual homecoming game for 2006, welcomed the reigning MVC champion Triad Knights. The Knights, were coming off a 30-6 win over Mascoutah, and had been honored by the Belleville News-Democrat as the "Defensive team of the week". Triad had limited Mascoutah to just 67 yards of total offense. "Triad was all that I thought they would be very physical, very talented, and very patient," Jersey Coach Chris Skinner said.

The game on Friday night started off bad for the Jersey and after the first six minutes of the game, the local fans might have felt like it was going to be a long night for the Panthers. Triad took the opening kick-off and marched down the field aided by that huge line and by the running of RB Mike Sampson. The 5'11", 183 lb senior helped the Knights get on the board first when he punched it in from five yards out.

Jersey got the ball right back, however deep in their own territory they could not answer back and were forced to punt the ball back to Triad. The Knights took advantage of the good field position on the next series and again got a score from Sampson to go ahead 14-0, just 5:33 into the opening quarter. Sampson was the offensive star of the night for Triad rushing for 203 yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns.

The Panthers would strike back though in a hurry, midway through the second quarter. That's when RB Adam Hayes raced 91 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Triad lead in half.

The two teams would then trade scores before going into the half. After Mike Sampson scored his third touchdown of the night for the Knights the Panthers responded on a 27 yard touchdown pass from QB Andy Updike to James McAdams. The play climaxed into a bit of a wrestling match between McAdams and the Triad defender who tried to convince the referee that he intercepted the pass. Eventually the call went to the Panthers as McAdams was credited with the possession and the score. The Panther receiver has suddenly become Mr. Clutch when it comes to catching the big pass. McAdams has caught 9 passes for 184 yards for a 20.4 yards per catch average.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Panthers defense stood tall stopping a Knight attack inside the 10 yard line and forcing Triad kicker Nolan Ferguson to kick a 20 yard field goal lifting the Knights to a 24-14 lead.

But less then 5 minutes later, lightning struck twice for RB Adam Hayes. The 6'0" 200 lb senior took an Updike handoff and jolted 95 yards and another touchdown, and after Brandyn Snider connected on his third PAT the Panthers had cut the lead to 24-21.

That was as close as the locals were going to get when just eighteen seconds later Triad's Tyler Wiesemeyer raced for 65 yards. That score put the Knights in the drivers seat and it was sealed just a few minutes later when QB Elliot Corey ran for a 30 yard touchdown increasing the lead to 15. "I thought our kids played very hard and fought to come
back after we got down 14-0 in the first quarter." said coach Skinner after the game.

The Panthers fall to 1-3 in the MVC and more importantly to 3-4 over-all. Jersey must now win out the remaining two games if they are going to have a chance at advancing to the post season. "CM is our first round playoff game, we have to get over the hump and our kids need to believe that they can win. We did a good job last week of not turning the ball over. We did have too many penalties, but most of those were the result of aggressive play, I can live with that," Skinner added.

The Eagles find themselves with a 1-6 over-all record and in the roll of spoiler. "They are struggling some this year, but you can bet they will be fired up for this game Friday night. They will be playing for pride and bragging rights. We need to be patient and execute offensively and play good assignment football on defense," Skinner said in closing.
