#8 @ Bethalto (Civic Memorial)
J.C.H.S Wins 4th Conference Title In A Row In front of a packed Hauser field in Bethalto Friday night, the Jerseyville Panthers defeated conference rival C.M. 24-7. Jerseyville improved to 8-0, and won the Mississippi Valley conf. championship for the fourth consecutive year. Once again the Jerseyville defense stood tall, in keeping C.M.'s huge backs (Josh Brokaw and Todd Genteman) out of the end zone. The C.M. Eagles struck first, as they capitilized on a Jerseyville fake punt attempt. Panther punter Nathan Smay was stopped before gaining the needed yardage for a first down. Thats when the Eagle running game took over. Sparked by hole opening runs by Brokaw and Genteman, C.M. was able to take an early 7-0 lead when Andy Prehn finsished the drive with a 7 yard TD run. Jerseyville was quick to respond by taking the following kick off and march down the field. John Perdun scored on a 2 yard TD run to even things up at 7-7. Both teams then engaged in some classic smash mouth football, as neither team was able to score for the rest of the half. Jerseyville's defense completly dominated in the second half. The Panthers were finally able to take a 14-7 lead. As the third quarter ended, QB Joey Kallal connected to Brent Hawkins on a 55 yard touchdown pass. The Panthers then took a 17-7 lead when Greg Madson booted a 36 yard field goal. Thats when the Jerseyville defense went to work. The Panthers who had earlier recoverd a key fumble on a C.M. drive, forced 3 late Eagle interceptions, by Jerseyville defender Greg Madson. The final one setting up a 57 yard touchdown romp by RB Nathan Smay. Once again a total team effort by the MVC champs. Perhaps the most thrilling event of the game came in the final few minutes, when they Jerseyville fans were able to chant MVC. Jerseyville will end the season in Carbondale in a rare Saturday afternoon affair. At stake in this one? The Panthers want to finish undefeated and secure home field advantage, for the first round of post season play. The Terriers of Carbondale (5-3) are fighting for their play-off lives. Mike McInerney
