After a defensive battle with Libertyville last weekend that ended with a one point loss, the Bears needed to come out strong against Zion Benton to boost their confidence level.
After a very tough week of practice Coach Bryan Stortz and the Bears were ready to play against the winless Zee Bees. The Bears defense got off to a great start by holding Z-B's offense deep inside their own territory which eventually turned into a interception return for a touchdown by junior linbacker Brent Marks. 80 seconds into the game and the Bears were up 7-0 on a 9 yard interception return.
On the following possession it looked like Zion Benton was going to even the score but were held in check by the Bears defense as Z-B stalled on the Bears 10 yard line. As if things couldn't get any worse for the homecoming crowd, the Bears' senior NIU bound running back Kyle Skarb juked left and right and stiff armed his way into the endzone for a 50 yard score.
LZ also added another rushing td from junior running back Adam Simpson on a three yard dive into the endzone. Z-B did get at least one score in during the closing minutes of the first half with a 58 yard bomb from quarterback Anthony Scott to wide receiver Castro. LZ sealed the deal with a 70 yard interception return from junior Mike Dietrich.
The Bears(4-1, 2-1) have an away game at Antioch next friday, but are more looking forward to the October 7th matchup against Lake Forest High School. Zion Benton (0-5, 0-3) travels to Libertyville next weekend to take on the division leading Wildcats.
