Week #8 vs. Rock Island (Alleman) (7-1)
10/17/2003

The Rocks defense puts the clamp on this Allmen run.

Davis's Defense Comes Up Big

Rock Island (Almquist Field) - For the second week in a row Rock Island's Lawrence Davis (sr DB 6' 190) scored a TD on defense and while his supporting cast played a big role in the Rocks 35-19 victory Friday night over the cross town rival Pioneers two of his plays helped swing momentum for the rocks.

You couldn't ask for a better match up on a Friday night. Two teams from the same town, one public, one private. Both with undefeated (well at least on the field) and to sweeten the pot even more throw in a Western Big 6 Conference title and you've got the makings of a sell out crowd.

A pregame estimate had put the possible draw for this game at 10,000, but a chilly evening may have kept more than a few people in, but a good 5,000 came to watch and they weren't let down.

Rock Island came out running, and that's really all they did. As well as Alleman. There were two passes the entire evening. Both from the Rocks QB Jacob Markum (jr. 5'11 181) and somebody caught both of them, one for a 26 yard gain the other for an interception.

Although Alleman's Ryan McGinnis (sr. QB 6' 185) did go to a passing situation twice. One resulting in a Dail Rice (sr. DL 6'1 200) sack, the other he ran for a gain of 2.

All together there was just over 600 yards rushing between the two teams. Oddly enough the Rocks John Saldana (sr. RB 5'10 172) was the only one to crack 100. He finished with 13 carries for 132 & a TD. His Rock counter parts Ryan Waylond (sr. RB 5'7 160) would go 13 for 90 with 2 TDs & R.B. Krakliow (SR FB 6' 179) topped off the Rocks ground game, getting 13 carries for 95 yards & a TD.

The Rocks first drive would suck up 8 minutes of clock time and pushed them down field 63 yards in 14 plays only to be stopped at the 3 yard line by Alleman. A blocked field goal by the Pioneers' Hank Bleshause (sr. RB/dB 6' 175) that he would recover, would help lead to a 70 yard Alleman drive and a 3 yard Nate Just TD with 10 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

Rock Island would answer back with their next drive resulting in a Krakliow TD. Alleman, would answer back themselves. Putting together a 80 yard drive for a Belshause TD of 15 yards. The PAT was missed.

Alleman would the catch the Rocks of balance and recover an onside kick. Three plays later the Pioneers would punt and then watch as the very first play from scrimmage would be a multi tackle breaking 85 yard TD run by Saldana. The ensuing PAT would give the Rocks a lead they wouldn't give up.

One of Davis's moral dampening plays came on the next Alleman drive. After being forced to go three and out, Davis busted through the line to not only block a punt, but return it as well.

His other huge play came at the end of the first Alleman drive in the third quarter. On 4th & 3 on the 27 of Rock Island, after driving down on 15 plays. Davis tackled Belshause for a 3 yard loss in the back field forcing a turn over on downs.

The Rocks ensuing drive would put them ahead for good as they would score again for a 27-13 lead to end the third.

Rocks' head coach Vic Boblett, credited the defensive coaches, saying "In the second half they made some real good adjustments to slow down their offense."

Coach Boblett noted the play of Alleman at the beginning of the game. "After the blocked field goal , Alleman drove the ball and showed that they're the team that they are...Offensively we kept pounding at them. They had seven guys going both ways, we didn't have any."

Both teams finish in conference play 4-1 and may share the conference title.
