6A Finals vs. Normal (Community) (14-0)
11/25/2006

Finished Business

Champaign (Memorial Stadium) - With 6 seconds left in the 6A State Finals game, all the Ironmen players & coaches rushed out onto the field except for a couple of Normal Community players who ran in the opposite direction over to the sidelines.

Grabbing onto a banner that had been behind the Ironmen’s bench the entire game that read “Unfinished Business” and tearing off the UN before attempting to carry the finished business sign and display it to the fans. While the banner didn’t hold up, the Ironmen did as they finished the season 14-0 and claim the 6A state title a year after finishing as the runner-up.

A shoulder injury took Batavia’s starting QB Alex Schroeder, out of the game with just a minute to go before the half. Stepping in was sophomore quarterback Jordan Coffey.

“It was a great effort by his teammates to protect him” Batavia head coach Mike Gaspari said about the performance of the Bulldog offensive line, who didn’t allow a sack after Coffey entered the game.

The underclassman, Coffey, almost pulled off what could have been the comeback of the year considering the fact that he passed for 2 touchdowns against an Ironmen defense that had only been given up 2 TDs in one other game this year.

Normal’s Omar Clayton would lead the Ironmen offense to the promise land, as he lead in both rushing and passing for Normal Community.

Clayton who’s mobility has been a big factor for the Ironmen all year had 61 yards rushing and a touchdown, but it was his arm that propelled Normal to the school’s first championship in 3 tries. Clayton was 16 of 25 for 259 and connected for 2 touchdowns with Alex Buck and Austin Davis.

Marcus King was a key factor for the Ironmen moving the ball even though he didn’t score. King had 9 receptions for 133 yards.

The Ironmen took a commanding 27-7 lead in the third when Cam McIntosh intercepted a Jordan pass and took it in for 6. McIntosh, who said he never had scored a touchdown before explained during

Coffey however looked to be finding a groove as he found fellow sophomore Ryan Webb on a 50 yard pass on the second play of the next drive after his interception, making the score 27-14 with 1:11 left in the third.

Batavia’s defense would step up, forcing the Ironmen to go 3 and out as they held them to -1 yards on that possession, thanks to a Brandon Holl sack.

Coffey would again orchestrated another scoring drive as the 4th quarter started, as the Bulldogs would get all, but 5 yards of their 86 yards in the air. Coffey’s pass to Dan Schmitt for 43 yards would cap off the drive, putting the Bulldogs within 7.

Normal would chew up almost 6 minutes of the clock in a 12 play 35 yard drive that ended with a punt and Batavia taking over at the 11 yard line of Normal. Seven plays later, the Bulldogs would go for it on 4th and 13 at midfield, only to have Alex Buck knock the ball out of the air.

Normal would take advantage of the field position and time, driving 28 yards for almost 3 minutes before Max Bakana’s 30 yard field goal helped make it a two score game with 27 seconds left to play.

Batavia’s Coffey finished with 215 yards completing 13 of 26 with 2 TD and 3 INTs. Brandon Holl would lead the defense with 11 tackles, with a sack, fumble recovery & a INT.

Normal’s Sam Smith would come up big on the Ironmen’s defense as he had 11 tackles, 1 for a loss. Along with his interception, Buck had 3 break ups.
