Bulldogs' Offense Has Size & Talent
8/21/07
by Vincent Johnson

Batavia head coach Mike Gaspari is quick to point out that they will have some size when referring to his 5 returning offensive players from last season’s 6A Runner-up team.

With Sean Ramsey (OL 6’3 285 sr.)  a third year starter, Will Thurn (OL 6-4 280 sr.) and Jordan Church (TE 6’3 240 sr.) also a third year starterl. Returning backup QB Jordan Coffey (QB 6’5 200 jr.) should have plenty of time to connect fellow underclassman and returner Ryan Webb (WR 6’3 215 jr.) or hand off to returning tailback Brian Krolikowski (6’2 215 sr.).

Gaspari sounds pretty confidant in this year’s team. “We feel that we’ve improved in most every area of our team. Including special teams. The only area we’re a little unfilled is our defensive side of the ball.” Gaspari who lost all but one defensive starter MLB Shane Holl  (6’2 220 MLB sr.), said that several members of last year’s team had started for 3 years and that experience would be hard to improve upon.

As special teams go, Gaspari pointed out that Coffey, while starting at QB for the sophomore team last season, was voted to the varsity All-conference team as a punter. Because of conference rules geared towards some of the Western Sun’s smaller teams, underclassmen are allowed to play on JV then varsity, even on the same night. Allowing Coffey double duty roll during the regular season.

Even with the returning players on offense Gaspari still knows his team is marked and with or without the 2 other teams in the conference that went to the semifinals last season (Geneva & Kaneland), it will be a tough fight for the conference title.

“You have to look at Rochelle. They went into the playoffs at 5-4 and knocked off the number one seed.” He said referring to the Hubs win over Geneseo. “Sycamore has a lot of returning starters and they’re going to sneak up on some teams.”

Coffey & Webb will be looking to prove they’re worthy of the buzz they got in the state finals game last year, when Coffey stepped in for the injured Alex Schroeder. Coffey, passed for over 200 yards in just one half of football. Connecting on a 50-yard strike to Webb for 1 of his 2 TDs on the game.

The talented duo could put Batavia in position for a dominant couple of years if the right supporting cast is there.
