Bombers Loose on the Road

Clinton (Clinton HS) – The Clinton Maroons came into tonight’s game with a must win label on it if they are to make the playoffs in Coach Chris Hammer’s first season as head coach. The Bombers have obviously fallen off from the success they achieved last year, but looked to improve in Clinton tonight.

The first quarter went by scoreless with not much offensive production. Then late in the second quarter with 2:11 left, Keith England ended the deadlock with a 3 yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper. This came after the Maroons offense put together a solid drive. Bo Kinder added the extra point to put Clinton on top 7-0 as the game headed to halftime.

Clinton added some insurance with only 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Keith England hurled a 34 yard touchdown pass to a wide open Tyler Monkman. This touchdown also came from a solid offensive drive with most of the yards coming from wide receiver turned tailback John Smith. The extra point, this time, was blocked so the Maroons settled for a 13-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

For really the first time this season, the Clinton Maroons’ defense played a solid 48 minutes. They also did not surrender a point in the 13-0 victory. The shotgun offense of Andrew Force and the Argenta-Oreana Bombers played a tough game, but it wasn’t enough this week. John Smith, who just kept digging for more and more yards up the middle, finished the night off with 28 carries for 122 yards.

The victory tonight should give the Maroons some confidence as they head into next week’s game against always the always tough, St. Teresa Bulldogs. The Bombers will play host to Monticello next week in what looks to be a good game.
