Week #6 vs. Salem
(3-3) The curse is over....Bulldogs whip up on Salem Carmi, IL (Evers Field) - We'll have to open Carmi High's time capsule to report on week six. The place is - Salem Illinois-High School Football field. The date is October 13, 1980. The weather was cool and windy. The event was Carmi - White County High School's last victory over the Salem Wildcats. The Score 34-14. Now back to the present. When the bulldogs took the field tonight there was much more on the line than just another football game. You could tell that from the opening kick off as Kevin Wolff ran it back for a 80 yard touchdown. The dogs took advantage of seven Salem turnovers and whipped up on the Cats 34-6 and snapping the 20 year curse. Kevin Wolff ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Brandon Pringle added 91 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon also became only the second in the schools history to run for 2,000 yards or more in his career. With 2,084 he stands alone in second place trailing the all time school rusher, Jeff Haley by only 83 yards with 3 games to play. The Bulldogs defense led by 9 solo tackles from Steve Swisher including 3 Quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery. Jerry Grant intercepted 3 passes and ran one back for a touchdown. The Dogs held the cats to only 129 total yards while tacking up 427 total yards. The Bulldogs lead 34-0 with three minutes remaining when coach Kurt Simon cleared the bench. The Wildcats scored their only TD with less than a minute to play, the PAT was blocked. The Bulldogs 3-2 overall 3-0 in the NEC,
travel next week to NEC CO-leader Mt. Carmel 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the
conference. The game is on Saturday at 2:00 PM. This will be the first
Saturday game Carmi has played other than State Playoff game since the
Bulldogs beat Love City 16-14 in 1976. The game with the Golden Aces will
be televised ( tape delay) on TW cable 47 at 10:00 Saturday Night. Last Saturday the football team, cheerleaders,
band, teachers, coaches and middle school football team conducted a car
wash and bake sale to raise money for the victims of the attack on America.
189 students and members of the community raised 6,457 dollars and Brown
Feed and Chemical match the funds raised for a total of $12,914 dollars
donated to the 9-11-01 Fund.
