Late Start Hurts Caravan

Joliet (Memorial Stadium) - A packed house became very quite on one side for the first two quarters as the highly touted match up between Illinois premier high school football programs started to look like a wash as Joliet Catholic jumped out to a 22-0 lead by the middle of the 2nd quarter.

Joliet's first possession resulted in a 46 yard J.R. Zwierzynski touch down run, but Mt. Carmel blocked the extra point making the score 6-0. JC intercepted a pass from John Mulcrone on the next possession but had to settle for a field goal. Making the score at the end of the first 9-0.

Staring the second quarter JC scored two more times, both on junior tight end Mike Kolodziej TD receptions. Joliet was now leading 22-0. A stunned Mt. Carmel sideline wasn't going to sit quite for long though as John Mulchrone hooked up with Shannon Lightfoot on a touchdown pass to bring the half time score to 22-8 and lead Mt. Carmel in catching up with 20 unanswered points.

Don Dorham's two TD runs of 3 and 43 yards in the 3rd helped to bring the score to 22-20 and bring the crowds to life. Unfortunately the Caravan was unable to keep up the pace and was stopped in the fourth by JC's defense.

Then in the fourth Mike Kolodziej jumped over a defender and dragged another into the endzone with 4 minutes remaining on a 4th and 12 play from 18 yards out. With the extra point conversion made the Hilltoppers had enough insurance after they stopped Mt. Carmel's offense with a little under two minutes remaining.
