Week # vs.Joliet (Catholic)(1-1)
9/1/2001

MC's 5'8", 160 lb. DB Brett Barnes grabs onto JC's 6'8" 292lb TE, before getting some help pushing him out of bounds late in the fourth quarter.

New King of the Hill

Chicago (Gately Stadium) - In what has become "the event" of the high school football season since it was reintroduced 10 years ago after both Joliet Catholic & Mt. Carmel won state titles in their respective divisions. Has once again lived up to it's name.

In front of a capacity crowd the Hilltoppers were knocked off their number one spot, by the only team that it would be fitting to do so. The Mt. Carmel Caravan.

The game started out like most were expecting. Hard hitting, hard nose running, no frills basically. The Caravan would score first on a 11 yard run by Tom Brown. With a minute forty six remaining in the first quarter. The Caravan's defense was swarming as Nick Orlando and company made gaining any ground for JC difficult. Both J. R. Zwierzynski and Chris Gruber were fairly silent on the ground and Graig Tomasino was unable to connect with giant Mike Kolodziej. A missed Hilltopper field goal was as close to a score as they would get in the first half.

Once the third quarter started so did the flood. Chris Goffer would catch a short pass and extend it for a total of 73 yards to start the Caravan's onslaught. Next would come a 32 yard rush by Greg Owens and a 26 yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown by Niall Campbell, to put the Caravan up 28-0 with still six minutes left in the third.

Catholic High would answer back by scoring 21 unanswered points on a Zwierzynski 2 yard punch up the gut with a little over a minute left in the third. Joliet would start the fourth off on a 47 yard Chris Gruber touchdown run. They would capitalize on a Ross Crampton fumble recovery right afterwards to score 3 minutes later on a Tomasino to Brett Hettman pass reception for a TD.

With a seven point deficit, the momentum of the game had swung back in favor of the Hillmen, who looked like they might have some late game heroics in a come from behind victory, much like they had in the first game of this annual series 10 years ago, but that wouldn't be the case today. Owens would score again for MC and coach Frank Lenti's 200 career victory was secured when a tipped Tomasino pass was intercepted by linebacker Dan Brown with just under three minutes left.
