8A Playoffs 2nd Round vs. Naperville
(North) (7-4)
Caravan Advance With Tough DChicago (Gately Stadium) - For long time Caravan fans, Friday night's 2nd round playoff win over Naperville North was nothing out of the ordinary as Mt. Carmel use ball control and defense to advance to the quarterfinals in 8A. Taking a knee on just their 3rd possession of the night, QB Carter Kopach and his Caravan teammates would go into the half with a 14-0 lead over the Huskies, as their two other possessions ended with touchdowns and ate up almost 12 minutes of the game. The opening of the game looked like things might be going North's way, as they took the opening drive to the 1 yard line eating up almost 8 minutes of the clock and getting key 4th down conversions on a fake punt by Jordan Tassio (QB/P/K 6' 200 jr.) and a drawing the Caravan off sides on a 4th & 4. The Caravan would win the most important 4th down conversion of the drive though, on a 4th & goal at the 1, as a host of defenders stopped Steve Hlavac (RB 5'9 180 sr.) just short of pay dirt. The Caravan would take the ball from the 1 and go 99 yards over the next 6 minutes, ending the drive with an 11 yard Kopach run with 10:35 left in the 2nd quarter. Tim Brown (RB 5'9 165 jr.) would round out the scoring for the Caravan as he plunged into the endzone with 2:42 left in the half on a 1 yard run, that was set up by him a the previous play, a 12 yard run on 3rd & 9. Mt. Carmel looked like they might give the game away as the 2nd half started with a couple of fumbles. The first coming on a fumble recovered by Ben Kelsey around mid field. The Caravan made up for that as Ron Newcomb (DE/TE 6'4 235 sr.) sacked Tassio for an 11 yard loss setting up the Huskies to go 3 & out, a muffed punt return gave the Huskies a new set of downs and the ball at the Caravan 48. Ken Harrington (RB 5'7 170 jr.) would put the Huskies within 7 as he scored on a 1 yard run. But that would be as close as Naperville would get as the rest of the game would be all Caravan. After not scoring at all in the 3rd quarter Mt. Carmel put up 21 points in the 4th quarter with two rushing TDs from Eric Ramirez (RB 5'9 190 sr.) and an interception returned 36 yards for a TD, by Antonio Vasquez (DB 5'10 180 sr.) whne the Caravan would all but lock up a trip to the quarterfinals with 2:36 left to play up 35-7. by Vincent Johnson
