Week #3 vs. Chicago (DeLaSalle) (2-1)
9/10/2005

Crusaders Roar Back

Coach Steve Nye is on to something. He is using the old adage that defense wins championships. That oft used phrase was so true throughout last season's Prep Bowl run and is holding court in 2005 for the CCL Blue Division leaders as they used 26 unanswered points en route to a convincing 32-7 win over the DeLaSalle Meteors at Dan Ryan Field. The win enabled Rice to move to a perfect 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the CCL Blue while dropping the Meteors to 2-1 and 0-1 in the Blue.

It always seems that a different player is stepping up for the defense and this game was no exception. Last week, Joe Gibson announced his return to the lineup from an injury by tallying three interceptions, a career high for the senior. Now Pat Garrity took his turn with two picks and a fumble recovery. Overall, the Rice "D" forced six Meteor punts after the initial DLS score.

The Meteors trailed 6-0 in the opening stanza when QB Rich Kavalauskas connected with C.J. O'Connell for a 37-yard touchdown. The extra point gave DeLaSalle a 7-6 lead. But Crusader signal caller Tim Evans answered in triplicate with three TD passes to junior WR Paul Gannon to put the Crusaders in control, the first of which gave Rice a 12-7 lead and from there the defense made it game, set, and match. Brendan Sheehey powered in from one yard out to close the scoring.

Evans finished the game 6-8 for 98 yards and Gannon talled five receptions for 64 yards and the three TD's. Austin McDonough powered the ground game with 9 carries for 98 yards and newcomer Mike Malloy pounded out 68 yards on 14 carries and added a TD. For the Meteors, Kavalauskas finished 9-of-14 passing for 94 yards and the lone DLS score of the game.

For the fourth straight year, the Crusaders begin the season 3-0. But on Friday night, this stoudt defense face their toughest test to date when their old nemesis the Mt. Carmel Caravan come calling. First place in the CCL Blue is on the line.
