2005 Prep-Bowl vs.Chicago (Morgan Park)
11/18/2005

Mustangs Kick Crusaders Out of Repeat

By: Brian Snow

Chicago, IL (Soldier Field) Of all things, it took an extra point to win one of the most classic playoff games in Illinois High School History. The Morgan Park Mustangs scored the upset when offensive lineman Ramone "Ray-Ray" Johnson, placekicking for the first time ever, placed the winning margin in a stunning 14-13 Prep Bowl overtime win over the defending champion Crusaders at Soldier Field. Brother Rice finishes their season at 10-4.

It was a fierce defensive battle as both teams tested the others' will as they took a scoreless tie into the third period. Morgan Park was on the move when Senior Chris James - starting at QB for All-American Demetrius Jones - threw an interception to Rice cornerback Nick Panella. The Crusaders pounced on the opportunity using a 4th down conversion from Mike Malloy to turn it into a 7-0 lead when Malloy finished the eight-play drive.

The Mustangs struck back in a hurry as Chris James scampered in from 25 yards out to knot the game at seven heading into the final stanza. Again, the defenses took over until the overtime session.

The Crusaders drew first blood in OT as Tim Evans barrelled over from one yard out to give Rice a 13-7 lead. Then Mustang coach Lexie Spurlock snuck a trick into the game by icing kicker Mike McQuillan. The move paid off when McQuillian's extra point try sailed wide right. Morgan Park siezed the moment when James hit Demetrius Jones with an 8-yard TD pass to set up Johnson's heroics.

Morgan Park surprised the Crusaders by starting wideout Chris James at QB instead of Demetrius Jones. Alvin Washington, a voice of Public League Football since 1996, muses: "this move makes coach Spurlock look smart because now you cannot focus your energy on trying to contain Demetrius Jones." Adam Fox, the play-by-play voice of the Prep Bowl adds: "Wouldn't you know it, the Mustangs again pull out a miracle on the last play."
