Week #4Chicago (Mt. Carmel)(4-0)

Crusaders Surrender Yards & Game to Caravan

For the first 24 minutes, it was a battle of wills and a battle of defenses as the irresistible force - the Mt. Carmel Caravan offense - squared off against the immovable object - the Brother Rice Crusaders defense. For the last 24 minutes, the immovable object was moved, pushed, and shoved around as the Caravan siezed control and delivered a 24-0 shutout of the homestanding Crusaders. The Caravan moved to 4-0 on the season and took an early one game lead in the CCL Blue Division while dropping the defending conference champs to 3-1.

Rice's defense struck quickly as they forced a fumble at the Caravan 37-yard line early in the first period. But the Crusaders were not able to take advantage as they subsequently punted. From there, neither team was able to move the football into the other's territory as the first stanza ended in a scoreless tie.

Mt. Carmel began to find their rhythm late in the second quarter as the running game found a groove. The triple option trio of quarterback Carter Kopach, running back Dominic Sulo and fullback Larry Dortch began to chew up yards and they finally penetrated the Rice end of the field. After an exchange of punts, Kopach's arm put the Caravan in scoring position by connecting with wide receiver Matthew Banks on a 54-yard pass. Rice's defense stiffened and the Caravan had to settle for a field goal and a 3-0 lead going into the break. But you sensed the tide had turned.

All of a sudden, the Caravan running game exploded. They took the third quarter kickoff and marched 78 yards in 12 plays and chewed 4:59 off of the clock and extended their lead to 10-0. After a three-and-out by Rice, Larry Dortch ripped off a 33-yard run on MC's next drive and capped the drive with an 8-yard TD run to extend the lead to 17-0. Dominic Sulo closed the scoring in the 4th period with a 7 yard TD run.

The immovable object has been moved. The irresistible force did its job.
