Week #7 vs.Burbank (St. Laurance) 4-3
10/7/2005

Crusaders Overwhelm Vikings

It was a matchup of a divisional leader against a reigning divisional champion. The champion showed their mettle as the Brother Rice Crusaders, defending CCL Blue Division Co-Champs demolished the St. Laurence Vikings - leaders of the CCL White - by a final of 49-0.

The Crusaders totaled only 254 yards of offense. So why was the game so one-sided? Because every one of those yards were made on the ground. Tim Evans just kept handing the ball to his backs and they did all of the damage. Senior RB Austin McDonough carried 7 times for 91 yards and two TD's and Mike Malloy rushed 13 times for 82 yards and a touchdown. Brendan Sheehey added 41 yards on four carries as the Crusaders rushing attack was all they needed.

Just as the passing game came up big against archrival St. Rita, the ground game attacked St. Laurence at every angle. With barely two minutes gone in the first period, Austin McDonough galloped 15 yards for the opening touchdown of the game and a 7-0 lead. That cushion would only continue to grow as Brendan Sheehey bulled in from 27 yards out to increase the lead to 14-0. That would be all the space that Rice would need.

Every bounce went the Crusaders' way. Even the bad one that popped out of RB Owen Yanz's hands - right into center Jim Keaty's hands. Operating from the Viking 34, Owen Yanz took a handoff and squirted free on the right side and picked up 10 yards. Then disaster seemed to strike as Yanz was popped by a Viking linebacker and the ball bounced free. However, Jim Keaty scooted to the ball, scooped it up and raced 24 yards untouched for a touchdown which closed the first half scoring. Brother Rice led 35-0 at intermission.

The Crusaders now head to Providence for a huge CCL Blue battle against the defending State Champion Providence Celtics next Friday night.
